The Divinge Lorraine Hotel is an abandoned hotel located in North Philly. It was built in the 1890s, originally used as an apartment building. In 1948 the building was bought by Father Divine and used it for the Universal Peace Mission Movement. The Divine Lorraine was open to all races, sexes, and religions, as long as they were willing to follow the rules. Some of the rules were no smoking, no drinking, no profanity, and no mixing of the sexes (men and women slept on separate floors). the building was officially closed in 1999 and sold in 2000. Since then it has stood on North Broad Street, gathering new graffiti each year. It has gone through a couple of different owners since its closing. The newest owner has claimed to renovate it and turn it into subsidized housing and apartment buildings. This claim was made over a year ago and the renovations havent started. I’m hoping they wont start for a while because this my favorite spot in the city.
